Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win.
