Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
