Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
