Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
