Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
