Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
