Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
