Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
