Be brilliant, play clever, and master craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
