Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
