Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
