Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
