Be cunning, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
