Be cunning, play cunning, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
