Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
