Be cunning, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
