Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
