Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
