Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
