Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
