Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
