Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
