Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win.
