Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
