Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
