Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
