Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
