Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
