Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
