Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
