Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
