Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
