Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
