Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
