Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
