Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
