Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
