Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
